Following successful participation at COP27 last year, ICOM is pursuing its advocacy in Culture-Based Climate Action.
At COP28 in Dubai last week, ICOM partnered with IFLA in the organisation of a panel discussion on culture and greening education and was also present as a civil society representative at the High-Level Ministerial Dialogue to advocate the adoption of a framework policy to recognise culture as a contributor in climate action.
ICOM’s attendance at the High Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate-Based Action
ICOM’s President and interim Director General attended the High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate-based Action on the 8th of December. The event marked the launch of the Group of Friends of Culture-Based Climate Action at the UNFCCC (GFCBCA), an informal coalition of Culture Minister’s representatives of UN entities, international cultural organisations, community voices and civil society organisations. Chaired by the UAE, the event featured spoken and written interventions from the attendees addressing the importance of recognising culture in climate actions.
A decision was made to adopt the Joint Work Decision marking the successful end of the meeting. The Joint Work Decision on Culture and Climate Action is a UN process to integrate culture into climate policy and harness the culture sector’s contribution in climate action. A global call to action, of which ICOM is a founding signatory was launched prior to COP28 to encourage actors in the culture sector to support the Joint Work Decision. Its adoption will take place at COP29 which will take place in Azerbaijan in 2024. Learn more about the Join Work Decision here.
COP28 Session: Culture for Transformation – the culture sector’s role in greening communities
To address culture’s role in greening communities, a panel discussion was organised in partnership with the International Federation of Libraries Associations and Institutions (IFLA) which took place on the 6th of December in the Greening Education Hub.
The roundtable engaged in a discussion around two key questions: (1) what support is needed, and from whom, to successfully implement culture-based greening community strategies?, and (2) how can we more systematically monitor, evaluate and communicate success?
The panel of speakers featured various organisations, including ICOM with Nicolas Kramar from the ICOM International Committee NATHIST to share his expertise on the topic.
